Can anyone say "Tom Green?"
A far as the difference between nut materials, theyve done studies on tone/sustain/strength, and, in order from crap to good, here goes.
Plastic
Brass
Graphite
Bone.
They use plastic because its cheap, and its just plain evil. Brass doesnt have the sustain properties of graphite and bone becuase of its density and mass, and strings tend to slip around it in a bit, killing the note (slightly. but it takes away from the clarity of the sustain). Graphite is strong, and has more sustain than brass and plastic, but still doesnt add really any tone. Bone improves tone and sustain wildly, (i replaced the nut on my ibanez...the plastic one broke, and this is where i learned about "nuts"...in a "flash"!

), and is really really strong. Cost wise, its second...brass is the most expensive. Brass was so popular for its look more than anything...hey, it was the eighties! So there. Brass is also a b!tch to file, so i suggest get bone, and order some files.
