anyone done a setup on a marcus miller?

there's one at my local GC that just arrived, looks good and sounds great - until you get to the 15th fret - then nothing works at all. all the strings buzz at the 15th fret and they stop sounding altogether at the 17h fret.

it looks like the neck is more recessed than it needs to be, but the "tilt" is not right. i'd like to get it (especially since GC has a big sal starting tomorrow).

if anyone has experience adjusting the truss and tilt on a MM, maybe you could say something about how simple (or complicated) the process is... i've never used the tilt feature on a fender before.

thanks!

Hi there,

I have a Marcus, it's my best playing bass by far, I always get compliments on it.

I would read the set up guides on this board (Gary Willis) and do a search for threads about shims, etc.

If I recall correctly, I didn't use the neck tilt b/c it was maxed out so I made a shim out of a cut up business card and then adjusted the truss rod so it was pretty flat. You can definitely get crazy low action on this bass.

I highly recommend learning how to do your own set ups so you can save cash and get it exactly the way you want. It's not that hard and it's fun too.

I got mine from GC last yr....it was worth the $$...I think I talked them down to 800 plus a hardshell case....850 or 875 out the door....
Anyway I always use low action, I brought the neck back about 1/8 - 1/4 turn to get the neck just about flat, I marked the truss rod with a sharpie for a ref. point of the original setup.....then I adjusted the bridge to get low enough for my taste......you'll get some buzz, I don't notice it playing amped though.
