I just shipped my Fender CS Jazz off to Lakland to get plecked. Anyone else that has had this done to their basses please post your thoughts/impressions on this process. Thanks.

I found the results to be minimal, and I mean minimal, on basses that already have a good fret job, such as a Lull (before he started to Pleck). I only noticed a marked change on basses where the frets needed attention anyway. |

Noticeable difference in both playability and fret/string noise on all three. If you like your bass and want to show it some love, the plek is the way to go!! |

I think it makes a huge difference!
I've had three basses plek'd by Mike Lull. Two were Lulls - an M5V and a PJ5. I like medium-low action and I have a medium-heavy attack, so pleking made the basses play much better. It also seems to tighten the sound a little in the middle of the neck (hard to explain -- you have to hear it).
I also had an F Bass BN5 plek'd. I've always had trouble getting adequately low action with BN5's. This made all the difference!
YMMV of course.

I know the maching might adjust the nut a bit and I don't know if it can handle it on certain basses w/ Brass nuts ( Ken Smith, Fodera, PEDULLA, Warwick ) I know the higher end warwicks still use the Brass Nuts on request and the PLEK site mentions Warwick as using it. Anyone have any idea?? |

They emailed prior to say it needed either a new nut or the current shimmed because it was too low...That caught me by surprise, the bass is almost new from the factory and it makes me wonder about a $3K (new) that has a nut that is too low. I told them to replace it. Bad QC by Fender on this one though I'll post my take on this as soon as get the bass back (next week).

It plays better than it did and there is an improvement in consistency all along the fretboard. Maybe my expectations were a too high and the kind of action I would like are just not obtainable on this bass or maybe I need to tweak it a bit. They did a good job and I feel as though I got what I paid for. I would recommend it to anyone considering it.

| | | | Would getting an older bass, like a '74 Precision, plecked be a good idea? |

My Jazz is a CS $2k+ bass and I wanted it set up and prepped as best as it would get and that's why I had it done. I wasn't experiencing any big problems with it to begin with. I just really wanted the action as low I get could it without any fret buzz and level frets are part of that equation so in hindsight the expense was a luxury not a necessity.

I am currently waiting on a Glaub PJ that should be here in a couple weeks that will be plek'd and I'm interested to see how this one will play. |
