Anyone ever coat a fretless with epoxy? Also, coating maple with epoxy?

My project for this summer, once I get out of school, is to de-fret my old 80s Matsomuku bass (Electra brand) with dying frets. It's a maple board, and yes, I'm sure I want it fretless; I really dig those fretless maple boards. My question is NOT about de-fretting... it's about coating with epoxy, since maple's not hard enough to be played on it's own as a fretless, which I know all about. So... yeah. What kind of epoxy should I use? Marine-grade stuff right? Anything I'll be able to find at my local Ace hardware/Menards/Home Depot? Also... marine epoxy is still the ok way to coat it, even though it's a maple board? I think I've seen it on maple boards before, but I don't remember... thanks.
