applying a finish to an unstripped bass.

I want to apply my own little graphics here and there to a P-bass of mine. The problem is, I'm happy with the colour, and I don't want to sand down the finish to apply the graphic, as it will damage the paintwork.

Any advice?

What kind of graphics? So I'm guessing printing it out on a blank sticker sheet and cutting it out won't be acceptable here. Were you going to hand paint these graphics? Automotive/bike pinstripers do this all the time. Go to a sign shop and get some paint there and you can paint right on top of the clear coat of your bass and wont have to worry about it coming off. Just wipe down with alcohol first to clean the area and do your art work. You didn't say permanent or not, so either stickers or sign paint are my ideas.
