Asymmetrical neck conversion?

Sign in to disble this ad
Wondering if it's possible (and a good/bad idea) to take an existing neck - something reasonably big like a Fender V - and re-sculpt the back of the neck so it resembles the asymmetrical necks found on Tobias and other basses? I was thinking of sanding or shaving the G string side of the neck down a bit, and that might make it a bit more comfortable...

Unless you have the skill, tools, templates, etc., I'd say no. I'm not sure if the revision would compromise the integrity of the neck but why risk it? Again, a great question for the Luthiers' Corner.

Hmmm.... repost and risk the wrath of anti-reposting TBers, or start a new thread and post a link here, or hope they'll find it on their own and bestow their worldly wisdom upon me from beyond the forum, or... or... ????

Repost. You have a valid question; I just think its in the wrong forum. "Right church, wrong pew". Good luck with the project...if viable!
