Unhappy B-String Intonation Off (E,A,D,G all good)

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently picked up an LTD Deluxe J-1005 bass. It's got a measured 35" scale on the B-string and a Hipshot A bridge.

When I got it, I noticed intonation was off on the B-string. Not sure of the string's age, I didn't worry too much about it.

However, I replaced the strings and I'm seeing the same behavior, after adjusting the neck and action for the new strings, the B-string is still about .02$ sharp with the B saddle fully back.

The other strings intonate perfectly and line up just about as expected. I plan to remove the spring on the B saddle and see if that gives me any more adjustment room.

Does anyone have any suggestions if that doesn't pan out?

Thanks

Bob

Is it really off bad? Removing the spring is the best idea for now - I hope that does it.

Thanks Solarmist,

It did help a bit, now it's off about 1.25 cents.

But... Billw97, who happens to work for Hipshot, got in touch with me and after offering helpful advice, is sending me a modified saddle to allow me more adjustment space.

I was surprised and impressed by this generous offer. The saddle should be here early next week. I have no doubt I'll be in better shape than I am now.

Needless to say, I'm going to remember this kind of "above and beyond" customer support the next time I need tuners or a bridge, or anything Hipshot makes.

Meh. You'll never get it perfect. My B-String is the same way. I rarely ever use it above the 5th or 7th fret. Just think practical.

what does the bridge saddle look like? can you modify the slot (via an angled slot sloping away from neck side) so that the witness point for the B-string is on the extreme front of the bridge...

otherwise, the only other permanent solution is to take the bridge off, plug the screw holes, remount the bridge a few milimeters back, and then reintonate the entire bass...

Edit: I read on...seems the hipshot dudes are going with the first option...cool

Edit #2...actually got that wrong...making the witness point on the extreme front of the bridge will make it WORSE ....ahhh heck, wait for the hipshot

I have the same problem with my Ibanez 6-string (bass). The low-B just won't intonate right with the LaBella Deep Talkin' flats I use. Was not a problem with TI or the rounds I had before.

The Yamaha here has a nice work-around; check-out the bridge: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/docum...519160&index=1

Well, there was a happy ending to my story....

Billw97, who just so happens to works for Hipshot, actually sent me out a modified (reground) B-string saddle which allowed it to recess further within the bridge's body.

I've got a much better intonation on the b-string now!

Thanks to Billw97 and Hipshot for standing behind their products and helping make it right (even when it wasn't their problem)!

Bob
