B string sustain problems on my Spector

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I've noticed that the B string on my Spector Euro doesn't sustain nearly as much as the other strings. This is only really apparent on the fretted notes (especially 5th fret E)

I've messed with the angles of the saddles a little bit but to be honest I'm not fully sure what to do. I've tried changing the strings, but that hasn't helped. Although I strung it up EEADG and the lower E string sustains better than the B did but still not as good as the second E string.

This is really bothering me as I've got a gig coming up soon. I've emailed PJ at Spector and he assured me it's a setup problem and that I should just take it to a tech.

What do you guys reckon?

I have had a Spector Euro neck-thru 5 and currently have a Rebop 5 and my experience is not what your is. My experience with Spectors is that they have some of the best sounding B strings out there. I use a .130 B string.

One setup-related tip I can give is to make sure the saddle height is high enough to let the B string vibrate freely. Many times people get caught up in making their action as low as possible. But, if the B string is too low it doesn't have the room it needs to vibrate freely. I usually raise the B just a smidge, like a 1/4 turn on the allen keys, higher than the rest of the strings and I've had great results.

I agree that its a setup problem, not a problem with the bass itself. Make sure you are using the right strings (long-scale or extra long-scale, at least .125 gauge) and set the string height a little higher at the saddles.

i recently got a rebop off the classifieds here. i liked it when i got it but i had some notes that didn't ring out as loud and some that didn't sustain as well. i took it in for a setup and it's perfect now. find someone in your area that knows their stuff and take it in. only thing.. depending on when your gig is, you might just have to deal with it. i know my guy was backed up and the normal 1 week wait became 3. you know, with the bad economy it only makes sense that it was his busies post christmas setup time in 12 years
