bad intonation on G string

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
I have a Fender Jazz bass that has some abnormally bad intonation on the g string. The string is ~25 cents flat at the 12th fret. The other 3 strings are pretty good, but the g is waaaay off. I've attempted to adjust the string saddle, but it needs to move beyond the edge of the bridge (towards the pickups) for it to be correct. Measuring the length from nut to 12th fret is 17" and from 12th to saddle is 17", but this setting provides intonation that is not even close. What are the possible causes of this problem and how should I fix it?

Old strings can cause all kinds of strange readings. Try a new set.

Also try pushing down on the string just in front of the saddle to bend the string at a sharper angle over the saddle. Do that for all the strings...and every time you tune your bass. It has a huge effect on intonation

The strings on the bass are (were) a new set of Rotosound Jazz Bass 77 flat wounds (guage 45 on the G). The action is reasonably low, but not to the extent where I get a lot of fret noise while playing. I'll try pushing on the string at the saddle, and perhaps even change strings--this bass may be better suited anyway for roundwounds.
