bad string rattle

i have a really bad string rattle on A-D-G strings that sounds like its coming from the nut. i've looked closely and don't see the strings touching the frets and it just happened out of nowhere. it's a long buzz that gets louder and louder as i let the string ring anybody have any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Did someone mess with your bridge height? Do you have a ruler with the 1/64ths to measure the height of the strings?

Has there been a change in weather (more/less humidity)? Neck could need to be tweaked with the truss rod. This fixed it for me on one of my basses.

Also, try loosening and repositioning the strings on the tuners.
This fixed it for one of my other basses.

You just might need a good setup.

Was the nut carved out for heavier gauge strings at one time, and then changed to light gauge strings?
