Badass bridge installation

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 1993 American Fender Jazz Bass and I am considering changing out the bridge for a Badass. I really like the badass on my Geddy Jazz bass but I just love my 16 year old first American Jazz. So, first of all, is it easy to swap out the bridge. Honestly I am a little nervous. I have the skills to change out pickups (upgraded a MIM P-bass), change tuning pegs (upgraded an epiphone casino guitar) and adjust truss rods and string height for decent action. Is there anything else I should worry about? Will it screw up my intonation? Will my action be screwy?

Can this be done by an amateur like myself or should I just take it to a professional?

I am thinking I will identify a good repair shop in case I do totally mess it up after I try it myself.

The installation of a Badass is the easy part. The hard part is the setup after you install it. The Badass bridges have a much thicker base plate. You may have to shim the neck to get the action as low as you like it with a Badass.

Your intonation will change - but you said you can fix that. It is the string height that may be an issue. Out of curiosity, why switch the bridge out?

I am hoping to get more sustain and a little more "bottom." I am not sure I will get that. They look cool too!

Actually after doing some more research and realizing that the 1993 "long horn" jazz bass is a little rare and that it has a different bridge (a 3 screw vs. a 5) I may just keep it as is.

Sounds like a good idea to me as well.

The BadAss III is a three-screw, drop-in replacement for MIA Fenders.

If you're happy with the bass now, why do you want to change it? The old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" still applies. So does the old I.T. adage, "we'll keep fixin' it until we break it".

+1, As Steveaux points out make sure it's the BA III, if it's a 3 screw. If it's a 5 screw, use the BAII.
