| You can take all the strings off without damaging the neck. How else would a bass First: Be assembled to begin with. Second: Get fretwork/fretboard cleaning. Yea, you can take all the strings off. I typically start with the inner strings (on a 4 string, the A-D) and loosen the tension evenly from there. If it's going to be apart for a while, you may also consider loosening the truss rod to a middle point where its not putting tension on the neck. If you're simply switching a bridge, take the strings off, unscrew the old bridge, screw on the new one, restring. There will also need to be a setup involved. Whether it be relieving the neck more or less with the truss, intonation, or saddle heights. |
