Basic Setup Beyond Changing strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey All,

I am a bass player of three and a half years and have changed my strings twice. Once by myself and once by Sam Ash.

Anyway, I was wondering if I'll ever need to worry about trust rod adjustment, action, adjusting the nut and bridge etc...All that technical stuff. I was reading in a bass book and it just got me very afraid to bring tools to my bass when I don't even know what I'm doing!

During my begining years playing bass, all I cared about was playing.

Will I have to worry about anything besides changing strings down the road? I play an American Jazz bass. My only bass for now that I expect to hold up for a while.

Peece.

You might need to adjust the truss rod in extreme temperature / humidity changes. It's not that difficult or risky, as long as you're not trying to be silly.

Download this guide and read through it - it's a nice one to keep for future use and will answer some of your questions: http://www.jerzydrozdbasses.com/ulti...ass-setup.html.

Only if you want to. Many players just take their bass to a shop when it stops feeling like a nice smooth player.

I view it like oil changes for a car -- I'm glad I can do my own oil changes (saves money, and I can do it on my own time, as often as I want), but it's more work. Some folks would rather pay 30 bucks and move on. Different strokes...

Whenever you change string gauges, you should get the setup looked at -- different size strings on a bass will change how it plays and feels.

Cheers!
