bass EQ help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi im new to talkbass but i dont really know where to put this thread so ill just put it here

So i play a Yamaha RBX 375 and ive been having trouble with the D and G strings always being too quiet no matter how much i try and fix it with the EQ. The lower strings (BEA) all are fine but lets say i switch between the D and A string there is always a huge volume difference. I've tried putting up high on the bass and my amp and boosting the mid

Any Suggestions would be nice Thanks!

I am not familiar with that particular bass, but could it be the pickup height needs adjustment (i.e. made higher) on that side of the pup?

Try lowering the PUs on the B-E side. The larger strings cause more output from the PUs than the smaller strings since they have more mass acting on the magnetic field of the PU and move farther when vibrating. More mass and movement causes a larger change in the magnetic field and generates higher output voltage from the PUs.

On all my basses, the large string side of the PU is always at least twice as far from those strings as the small string side.

You will have to turn up the gain on the amp to get to the same overall volume, but that's what it's for.

I had a similar issue, and looked at the strings as a possible cause. I used to play DR strings a lot and had that issue. Now I use a Ernie Ball set that has a more even spread and the volume and thickness of the sound is more evenly devided over the strings. Probably there are sets like that from many brands. It's a personal preference.

Presuming your bass is properly set up and your D/G-strings don't have ridiculously high action...

Play your B-string. Play your G-string. Is the B-string louder? Raise the G-side of the pickup one turn, lower the B-side of the pickup one turn.

Rinse. Lather. Repeat.
