Bass finish sanding

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

Well, my Lakland 55-02 is heading to Chicago due to the neck issues I mentioned... In the meantime I've brought out my trusty 2001 Stingray5 fretless... It's got a very friendly feel to it...

Anyway, a few years ago a sound tech bashed the back of the bass around the tummy-cut really hard with a cutting tool.

After that the finish in that area began to "lift" and very sharp, thick and brittle chunks of finish began to embed themselves in my shirt while playing - also it's creating a powdery residue around the chunks... Now that I've pulled it out again I wonder what the best way is to sand the stuff down and stop it from "lifting"...

The rest of the bass is in great condition - although I admit the neck has been "nude" for many years (the oil finish is long since rubbed off the back)...

Any recommendations on what to do such that I don't ruin the wood?

800 - 1000 grit wet dry sand paper and linseed oil. it will look great. You may be able to go with a bit courser paper but careful.
