Bass in the Oven?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to strip the paint off a bass, but don't want to deal with all the chemicals and sanding to get off a poly finish, but I don't have a heat gun either. Can putting the body in the oven have the same effect as a heat gun? My dad has a friend that does this with car parts. Could it possibly mess up the body?

car=metal
bass=wood
hot metal=gets hot but cools down
hot wood=changes color, burns

So I would not do it to my bass

I doubt it would be in the oven long/hot enough to catch fire.

Yes, it could mess it up, very much so.

Or, it will work perfectly. Only one way to find out!

If you do this. You should totally video tape it.

A heat gun won't damage it too, will it?

I ran mine through an oven to cure the automotive paint and it was fine

You could try a non toxic paint stripper such as Soy-Gel.

LOL!! In the oven? It will ruin both the bass and the oven, not to mention it will stink up the place. I'm not a big fan of chemicals, but the sanding is relatively easy. Get a palm sander (preferably with a dust bag), and start with 400 grit paper. It will take the poly/paint off pretty quickly, then go to finer grit paper. Go to the 'search' here at TB and type in 'SPRAY PAINTED BASSES, lets see em'. Lots and lots of good info there.

I'm not so much worried about the chemicals as I am all the layers of stripping and sanding, and the mess.

Let me preface this by saying I am NOT advocating this.

but, It could definitely work. I was accidently melting the finish off the neck of my Double bass when I was changing the fingerboard. The finish will probably soften before the heat damages the wood, however you wood still need some chisels and sandpaper to take the softened paint off. The Idea is just to make the paint become looser and realease from the wood. YOU still need to get it off.

If it stayed in the oven too long it might be hazardous to: The Bass(Duh), The oven(Potentially) and the fumes could kill you.

IF I still had the jay turser five string I got for 30 bucks, and It didn't have the natural finish I liked then I MIGHT have considered this, but I have the tools to do otherwise.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want any paint residue left over in the oven after I was done with it. Plus it'll stink up your kitchen whole house real good.

I would just go get yourself a heat gun. Can't be that expensive...

I was planning on putting a layer of foil under it to prevent paint from getting all over the place. But I wanted to make sure that this idea would even work, as my dad insisted it would.

a heat gun heats a small area quickly while an oven heats a large area slowly.

You can snag a heat gun at Harbor Frieght for pretty cheap, BTW
