Bass Repair Newbie Here -- Some MIM Jazz Deluxe questions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I have a MIM Fender Jazz Deluxe Active bass that is in need of some repair. It's playable currently, but hardly. I like to play with low action, but the neck is bent so it is impossible to have low action.

I've attached all the relevant bass pictures.

These first two pictures show the main problem -- that the strings are way too far away from the neck near the center of the neck. This isn't because the action is simply too high, it's definitely because the neck is bent.

These next two show the missing spring on the fourth string. It's not a huge deal, but that string did snap once, which was irritating and a waste of money.

These next two show the missing knob. Not a big deal, but I would like to fix it if it's not difficult. I have the plastic knob laying around somewhere.

These next two show the bent neck. It was hard to get a good picture of the neck.

How do you suggest I go about fixing the bass? I don't have the proper wrench to adjust the truss rod, since my mom decided to throw it out after we moved when my parents divorced.

I apologize in advance for my ignorance, I am just hoping to hear some suggestions. If you don't feel like helping me, please just don't post.

Much appreciated!

You shpuld start by reading jerzy drodz setup guide available in the sticky posts, second, get a wrench for the nut of your bass, if I remember rigth is a 3/16" wrench. Then you will need patiente and care.

yep, you need a 3/16" hex wrench. you'll loosen the strings, then tighten the truss rod (righty tighty, just like a bottle of ketchup) until the neck straightens out. if it doesn't straighten before the wrench gets pretty hard to turn, stop.

you'll need to take it to somebody who knows what they're doing; they may be able to fix it with some washers under the nut, or it may be that the neck is bad, in which case it's time to go bass shopping
