I have three basses that I like to have precisely set up. So that has led me on a search for the best tool to measure action and pickup height. A simple ruler just didn't do it for me.
I order the Stewart-MacDonald "String Action Gauge." It looks great in theory but I found it hard to see the lines when held up next to the strings. It cost $20.
Incra makes a great ruler "6" Precision Marking Rule" that measure in 1/32" increments. I has little holes at each marking that make it very easy to see. It can be purchased for aroun $11 from Woodcraft.com or other woodworking sites. I highly recommend it. The only downside is that the measurements are all in inches versus metric.
One other very convenient tool is made by a company called Dynamite. It is their "DYN2527 Ultra Precision Ride Height Gauge." It's similar to a feeler gauge but in .5 mm increments. It really works very well for measuring neck relief, string and pickup height. It is sold by hobby stores that cater to R/C enthusiasts. It's designed purpose is to all R/C car modelers to set the height of their models to the ground. It is by far and away the best tool that I have tried. It costs around $15. It is very quick to use and very easy to see. It can measure in .1 mm increments but in reality I find that very hard to do, and not really necessary.
