bass sound

Hi, can anyone help me figure our the problem on my bass guitar?
I am a newbie in playing the bass. My bass is an Ibanez SR900 Active bass. First I don't know the difference between active and passive but my main problem is why my bass sound is like brrrrrrr brrrrrr instead of the firm round one. I don't know if its the amp, strings, pickups or setup. I even bought a preamp thinking that it can be fixed. But it turns out the same. I hope you can help me on this. Thank you very much.

Also, if you haven't already - put a new battery in. Bad ones are often a sound issue. Then - start by pulling back mids and highs and playing around with EQ. I have a Tobias that is sooo bright, I have to cut trebles back on both guitar and amp almost completely to get that shrilly sound elimnated.

It sounds like it might be chilly.
^above is good advice .
start at a low volume on the amp, run all your eq's flat.
Listen to each pickup individually.
make sure you are using a good (unbroken) guitar cable.
Is it a new or used bass?

I'd start with the battery. Like has already been said, a bad battery can cause sound issues. A bad battery in my bass causes it to start to distort.
Second thing has already been mentioned as well. EQ. There's a great post on here that you might want to search for called "Bass EQ Explained" that has helped me out a lot with that.

Just FYI -

Active means it has an electronic preamp built in and uses a battery. This allows better EQ functions to be built into the bass and eliminates the line cord from affecting your sound.

Passive means that the pickups are connected directly to your amp - no electronics in between.

Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Turn all the knobs and find all but the single one (voulme) that has no center detent/stop position. This middle position is flat for pup balance and bass, mids, treble. I suspect your have all the eq knobs maxxed out causing distortion and or lack of difinition. Normally one only boosts bass etc a small amount, or cuts it a small amout, or leaves mostly flat.
