then you can narrow it down to a single factor, if you swap all 3 simutaneously you wont know what the hell the problem was!
Here's what I would do to eliminate the variables...
1) Change the battery anyway. Try it out.
2) Take the bass to the music shop and try it out on their rig.
3) Buy new strings and change them. Try it out.

If these don't work, then maybe your active electronics might be going south on you. At this point, you're getting into time and money to figure out the sound issue. Maybe getting a new bass would be the better option if you don't want to spend the effort.
