bass sounds bad for slap

i recently bought a used squire affinity jbass to use for slap (cause previously my only bass was a fretless corvette) and i'm a little disappointed with what i've gotten out of it. now keep in mind that i know almost nothing about slap. its just that i can get a consistent slap and pop on other basses, but not mine. it seems like only the lowest 5 frets are slapable. it also seems like when i slap (but not pop) the string hits the pickups and thuds. i tried lowering both the pickups and hitting at the very end of the neck, but it still happens sometimes. i dont know if its a neck relief issue...fingerstyle is decent, and visually the neck has a good curve. but i had to raise my saddles real high to stop buzzing. the only thing i can think of is a neck joint problem. bad angle? bad pocket (not that i can tell, but who knows)?

on my jazz, i have the saddles as low as they can possibly go. it's great for slap. your truss rod may need adjusting. it it sounds like maybe your neck is bent backwards. and i'm not sure what others think, but unless it's unbearable, some buzzing isn't really a bad thing.
