Did a search. Didn't find much.

Would be great if I could find someone in San Jose, Santa Cruz or any other nearby place.

Anybody heard of a guy named Randall in San Jose?

I know that you are looking for someone in the south bay, but I can recomend an excellent guy in the Northbay area. His name is Dan Maloney. He was one of the head guys at Zeta and now does custum work and repairs. He has buit a few basses for Les Claypool of Prymus.

Here is his site: http://www.maloneystringedinstruments.com/

If you are looking for a good setup there is a Luthier CB Perkins in San Jose and Keith Holland (Guitar Hospital) in Los Gatos.

I have had good work done at Gryphon Guitars in Palo Alto. One of the guitar techs installed a superb bone nut on my Jazz bass. Good work!

Also, I'd contact Ed at Gelb Music in Redwood City and ask his advice.

I know a really fabulous guy in Santa Cruz. He builds acoustic instruments, too, so he really knows his stuff.

PM me for the details and what kind of work you need?

I highly recommend Steve Crisp in Santa Cruz. When I lived in San Francisco, I had him work on all of my basses, despite the distance.

Until a couple years ago he built instruments with Rick Turner at Renaissance Guitars (also in Santa Cruz as you probably know) for about 4 years. Before then he was a top tech in Austin (my current hometown) where his clients included Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Johnson, and other well-known local players. I was very happy with both his electronics and wood/fret work... not all techs can do both well, IME.

I'll second this suggestion, he's done very, very well by me. In fact, I need to get my '74 P-bass down to him so he can finish up the neck- CK comes highly recommended by me.

I have to add Greg Menacho of MSI Guitar Repair to the list. I've had him do some repair/setup work on my basses and is currently finishing up an electronics/pickup swap on my P-Bass. His work is excellent and his prices are exceedingly reasonable. He is pretty close to you as well, he's near the SW end of San Jose. PM me if you'd like his contact info.

I can't agree with this more. Greg is a great luthier who has IMHO a little too reasonable rates from a fellow luthier's perspective. I can't recommend Greg enough from MSI guitar repair.

where in SW San Jose? I grew up Santa Teresa area. I live in Hollister and commute to SJ. I need some stuff done. I CB Perkins (Winfield and Blossom Hill) is great, but expensive and long waits. I have taken a couple to Keith Holland Guitar Hospital in Los Gatos. The work is decent.

Any recommendations for good bass techs in either the east bay (preferably near Oakland / Berkeley) or in San Francisco? Not dying to drive to Santa Cruz (or even San Jose, for that matter).

I wasn't the one who'd asked originally about So Bay and Santa Cruz, but I figured some others from the bay area who'd read this thread might have a suggestion about the East bay and SF.

call gelb muisc in redwood city and ask for the contact info for Terry Hyatt. He's a repair guy that works from his house and is super good, fast and charges surprisingly fair prices.

Terry does all my stuff for me

Mark Miller is about the best that I've come across in the East Bay. He's now located in Moraga. PM me if you are interested.
