| Bass Tremolo Claw Screws

So I've been searching the interwebs for quite some time and I can't seem to find a good answer... such a simple question.
"What is the best size screws for the tremolo claw (any claw for that matter)?" "Best" could mean just which size is the most popular/common or if there is no reason which I should use.
I'm resetting up a poorly setup hipshot 4 string bass tremolo and in a few days I'll be drilling for the spring claw screw holes and I'm trying to figure out if I should use #8 x 1.75" Long OR 1.37'' Long? I think im stressing over this just for the fact the first time I could NEVER get the springs tension to properly match the sTrings tension where the bass was playable and the floating trem wouldn't move.
Any guitarists feel free to comment as I'm sure there aren't too many hipshot tremolo players around. I'm thinking the longer ones probably best since it would give me greater adjustment range moving the claw around? No idea the length I used the first time around since I've had this bass assembled and dissembled probably around 2004/05.
And on a side note I ordered some GOTOH power springs from Japan after reading some guitar forum posts on how strong they were.
