| basses staying in tune

My two main basses I use currently are also the best basses I've ever owned--a US Lakland Glaub, and a Sadowsky Vintage Metro(that one is actually a NAMM 2004 bass). I got them both used.
I'm curious about something: I've been basically alternating them in very similar situations, live/recording/rehearsing(just 'cause I love them both and can't decide which to use half the time!). They both had pro setups done when I got them(about a month apart) and have the exact same strings on of very close age/wear(I like DR nickel LoRiders, and like them after a few months of playing). Now, the Glaub stays in tune like a rock. Definitely one of those basses where you check the tuning after an hour set under lights and the damn thing is still dead-on. Or pull it out of the gig bag 2 days later--still in tune. The Sadowsky isn't so solid in this regard. It's not as if it's problematic, but if one of these two basses is going to go out a little during playing, it's the Sadowsky(granted it won't go out much).
Aside from basses with definite setup or hardware problems(which I don't think I have--my tech felt these were both great basses when he went over them--thought the NAMM Sadowsky Metro was nicer feeling than some NY ones he's played), what might be the reason for one quality bass being so "stay-in-tune" over another? |
