Unhappy baught a new fretless... found a problem...

I'm new here... what up everyone.

well, I bought an Ibanez EDA 900F about 3 weeks ago. I love the sound and look. Its got the Piezo/magnetic. Its amazing. A couple days ago I noticed a small hair line crack. I wasn't sure if it was a crack or a scratch so I didn't think much of it. Today I discovered its a crack because it got bigger... I can't use a strap now because of where the crack is. So here's my question(s)

Can/should i get it repaired?
Will it be an expiensive repair?
Is it something i can do my self?
Can i get a replacement body somewhere?
any advice would be much appreciated

Heres a picture of my bass except a fretted one...

Its on the back and goes from the right side of the neck where it attaches to the body around the back of that thumb, the one the strap hooks on. You see why i can't use a strap... i'm afraid of breaking off that thumb.

Sorry if i didn't use correct terminology, i'm a drummer gone bass and only been playing for about a year...

Did you buy it new? If it's only three weeks old, it must be under some kind of warranty. If anything, at least a return policy. If there isn't, just give the store you bought it from, or Ibanez, hell about it, and they'll probly do something for you. It's so new, I can't imagine them not taking responsibility for it.

I bought it used from a local Sam Ash store... I'll go there but i'm sure they will pull the whole "used equipment is 'As Is'" scheme. Now that i look at my receipt, its only been 6 days... haha i was way off.

Try to put some glue in the crack and clamp it down. Carpetner's glue is usually stronger than wood, so it *should* be fine. Of course, it sucks that it happened in the first place...

i'm gonna try and take it back first... and then i'll see if i can repair it if they won't take it back. The crack is too small to really get any glue in it.

Yes/Yes

I don't think so, but I imagine it will get more expensive the longer you wait.

Since you asked, I would be hesitant to say yes. I do alot of stuff myself, but when it is actual wood damage, I tend to defer to the pros.

Yeah, but that is real expensive probably.

Alright thanks everyone, I'm gonna head over there now and see if they will take it back. If they don't, any suggestions where to take it to get it repaired? I live in the pheonix area.

Don't take "no" for an answer when dealing with the retailer. If you KNOW that you did not cause the crack then be very adamant. Insist that they replace it and cause a commotion in the store if they refuse. Take it back on a busy Sat afternoon, they won't want to spend a lot of time on it.

Most likely they will replace it right away, though. This retailer is pretty good about that. Of course, if you caused the crack after you bought it, then you should just get it repaired.

I bought my Ovation Acoustic Bass with a crack on the top for a sharp discount! The crack does not affect the structure or sound so I was pretty happy.

Good Luck

They were way cool about it. I didn't have to insist or anything. I just said hey this is cracked i would like my money back. and they said ok. So i got all my money back. woo! i still miss the bass though... i really liked it.

That's great! It's good to know that good customer service still exists out there. That bass, btw, is a really nice looking bass.

I have a 1984 Ibanez RB850 that I de-fretted a few years back. It sounds good, I just need to get some touch up work done on the neck. My de-fret job was kind of sloppy.
