Bay Area Techs: Go for Menacho? Or Keith Holland?

Sign in to disble this ad
I need to get a good setup done on my lakland, and after seeing how high the prices were in San Francisco (I checked Gary Brawer and SFguitarworks' prices), I've given up on getting the "BEST" and need to find a more local shop.

I've searched the forums and am considering either Greg Menacho at MSI or Keith Holland's Guitar Hospital.
I'm in the Cupertino/Sunnyvale area, and distance isn't TOO much of a factor for me, considering I was initially looking at shops all the way up in San Francisco.

EDIT:
No reply to emails, either. Did I get the address correct at gmenacho@earthlink.net ?

Go to Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto and (make sure to) ask for Brian to do your setup. State exactly what you want and you'll be happy.

Ah, I've heard about them too (on TB, that is). Thanks. I'll add them to "the list" too.

- Greg Menacho
- Kieth Holland
- Gryphon

I'd suggest Brian at Gryphon. You may have to wait.

Wow, how come I hadn't heard more about Gryphon before?
Already 100% of the replies here recommend them!

Gryphon is known as one of the best acoustic guitar stores/repair places,
in the world. Think of a GC inversion, with all the guitars & amps, in the "acoustic room".

WOW.
well I checked their website and it looks pretty fancy. If they're too well-known, then that makes me scared of the $$$ and turnaround times... damn

EDIT:
alright, just emailed gryphon for a quote. they had like 10 different email addresses, so hopefully i sent it to the right one!

They usually take less time than they quote. Just make sure you specifically ask for Brian to do the work.

Hi,

I don't know the folks at Menacho, or the work at Gryphon, but I am familiar with Keith Holland, and I have been using them exclusively for my set up & repair work.

Another shop to consider in the San Jose area is CB Perkins. I have not used them because I found Keith first, and I don't want to have to explain what I want a 2nd time, etc.

Take care,

edg

Ack, adding CB perkins to the list...
Looks like I shouldn't have bothered to cross off anyone from the people I heard about at all!
I'm going to have to make my final decision real soon. Anyone have any opinions they would like to share?

update:
There was a reallylocal (like 5 minute away) guitar tech that just opened up so I tried dealing with him. His prices turned out to be too high so I'm BACK to SQUARE ONE!....

No email replies from Greg Menacho only. I'll be calling him soon to see if he's even still in business.

It seems like cost is a major concern to you, so you could spend less than $10 on tools and learn how to do it yourself.

Or, if you won't listen to anyone's advice, give it to some CL thirty buck lowballer, since price seems to be your ultimate concern.
