best bridge options for 4 string

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all wondering what its out there besides
Schaller, Bassass, Gotoh and Hipshot

building a 4 string that will use round wounds 45-105, 34" scale, bolt on.

adjustable string spacing is a must, I need to emulate the config of my Wals.

Prefer a non high tech look. Chrome for sure. Custom/boutique options would be most interesting as I have already google bass bridges to death.
Any custom bass makers offering their bridges stand alone?

any input appreciated, thanks much George

But the "high-tech" ones usually are the best to adjust string spacing

ABM makes a very nice bridge if you really want adjustable string spacing. on a 4 string, though, i'm not so sure if I see the point (unless you're possibly desperate to have equal distance between the strings, as opposed to equal distance between string centers). 19mm (3/4") string spacing is pretty much standard. regardless....

Tha AMB is somewhat high tech. its about the size of a Badass II. The ABM is quick loading and uses roller saddles on a threaded axel to adjust string spacing.

but personally, i'm a supporter of simple bridge designs; stable, no sideways play in the saddles, quick loading, and as few moving parts as possible. Look at Hipshot's type B bridge. Low tech, stable, but no adjustable spacing. The Hipshot Type A is a bit more high tech (esp. in appearance IMHO) but does have the adjustable spacing.

I must admit my exposure to different bridges is pretty much limited to the standard bridges on the basse I've played/owned. I did put a Badass II on my jazz bass and it really did improve the sustain and tone of the bass.

I've got to ask about the Badass II...with no slots on the saddles. Did you cut your own? What about keeping proper string spacing?

The BA allows you to put the string exactly where you want it. The drawback is you better know exactly where you want it before you file.

If I were building from scratch I'd put either the Shaller Roller Bridge or a Hipshot bridge on. The Schaller is an excellent performer that I've had very good experience with on many basses. The Hipshot looks better and probably works just as well. Here's an ad for Stu-Mac:

The StewMac jazz replacement bridge is similar to the Fender exept it has groves so it's not width adjustable. But very solid and original looking. But you could make some brass bridge pieces and groove them wherever you wanted (add a black spring or screw and it would look very custome made)
