What is the best material of nut for a fretless bass?
I personally like a bright snappy tone from my basses, fretless or not. So I'd assume I'd like a brass nut. What do you guys think?
ALSO: Wouldn't the material of the nut only matter for open notes? |

i've seen them so low that the string was actually resting on the fretboard for a tiny fraction of an inch, and it still sounded fine.

The nut material has no effect at all except for open notes. It makes no difference if the bass is fretted or not, the nut is simply immaterial on stopped notes.

John | I play as many open notes as I can for what the song key allows. With the brass nut on my fretless, I can't hear a discernible difference in my fretted notes and open notes.
String quality make, design and material is a lot more crucial IMO. Steel roundwounds are the go-to material for that tone you're describing. I prefer nickel d'addarios myself - more upper mid / less glassy scooped.
The brass nut certainly wont hinder though.

The op is planning to have the fb epoxied and is going to change the nut as well. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
