Best So. Cal. Bass repair

I hope this is in the right section.

Anyways, I bought my 75 Fender P and needed to have it worked on. I got a recommendation from a good friend to use Paul at Guitar Remedy in Tustin, Ca. I took it over, and had him replace the nut (as it had just broken) and just do a complete setup while I was there. Normally I like setting my own basses up, but I just wanted to see the difference. I got it back two nights ago, and it's all I can do to leave for work in the morning. It plays like a dream. I kind of fought it just a touch before, but now the only analogy is when you go out to barefoot and the water is glass smooth. It is easy to play. It is a dream to play. So, I just wanted to let you guys know, if you are in So. Cal and you want to have some work done on your basses, or guitars if you swing that way, then by all means take it to Paul at Guitar Remedy in Tustin, Ca. The best, I have ever run across.

I've heard good things about Repair Zone in San Diego, but I can't comment directly on their work, as I've never seen any. But one of their customers came in to my shop this week and said they were fantastic.

One in the South Bay

Robert at Mulderrig's Music is very good, too. He was the repair guy at Schweide's Music, until it burnt down. He repairs all strings, and horns and winds, too. He's been doing repairs for about 30 years. He's the only guy I trust with my stuff.

He's on Redondo Beach Blvd. just east of Hawthorne Blvd. in the Torrance/North Redondo area.

His number is 310-793-7777

Hope this helps. hrb

I favor Top Gear in La Mesa, both for lutherie, setups and amp repairs.

+1

Had my bass set up there and liked the job they did so I took my amp there too. Quality work, reasonably priced, and great guys!

Have had experiences with him. Does good work...if you're a "name", otherwise, you're shafted.

How much did Paul, in Tustin charge for a setup?

I always liked The Guitar Dr., in Fountain Valley. Last year he did an awesome refret on my '74 P-Bass.

120 for a complete setup. He installed a shim and did a few other things. I don't know what that is comparitively, but in my opinion it was very much worth it.

Fred's taken care of me for years now. Quite happy with his work. In fact, just took my jazz in today for a setup and installation of a hipshot detuner (you've made your endorsee proud jauqo).

They've become my new choice for amp repair. They took care of me last time and fixed issues that the previous shop dropped the ball on.

I've heard good reviews about Blue restoring acoustic instruments, but nothing on anything else. I also heard it takes a long time with them.

It's been years since I've been there - it used to be on Garnett in Pacific Beach - now it's toward Fashion Valley or La Mesa, I think?

I'm going to check out The Repair Zone - looks like Clairemont is close to me.

I used to go to Rick @ The Guitar Shop in Brea, but now I've started using Hugh @ 13th Street Guitars in Huntington Beach...good work from both guys.

News to me ...Eric has been taking care of my basses for the last 10 years or so...always excellent work at a very fair price. Sorry you had a bad experience but he will always get the highest rating from me.

That's high... Mine usually run about $55 and small "extras" are usually no charge. That could be due in part to the fact that I have been going to the same guy for many years.

I just got my Spector back (2 days!), tweaked the truss rod a smidge, evened out the frets towards (from the 12th on up), set the curvature of the saddles to match the fretboard - just amazing difference between my crappy 'set up' - the only thing I got right was the intonation. But now, the pickups are at the right heights, the action is LOW, no buzz and the bridge looks newer.

Totally happy with Fred's work. Repair Zone gets an A+ from me.
