Best Vintage P-Bass Replacement Neck?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey folks,

I've got a USA Vintage Precision and the neck keeps bowing. It's been tightened all the way, an extra bolt added, etc., but it keeps moving. My repairman said that's he's seen a lot of this with the reissue Ps. The neck is fairly thin (which makes it have a nice feel) but unstable.

It seems inevitable that I'll have to replace it. Soliciting opinions: Who makes the best standard replacement for a Vintage P? (rosewood and maple) I have a Warmoth neck on another bass which is very nice, but different -- it is thicker and has a flatter radius. I'm looking for one shaped like the Vintage, but maybe a tiny bit thicker and more stable. I see that Mighty Mite, Allparts, Stewart MacDonald, Fender, etc. all offer replacements. Opinions about these various options?

Thanks!

Since you're in Nashville, you should contact Guitar Mill in Murfreesboro. There are other great neck makers out there (USA Custom Guitars, Musikraft, etc.) but going with a local source means you can actually see their work before you buy.

You say an extra bolt was added (??) - not sure what that would have done. If the truss rod is bottomed out, what about adding washers under the truss rod nut? That's an old trick to get more grip out of the rod.
