Question best way to clean neck?

Sign in to disble this ad
I did a thorough search on the forum but found nothing. What in your opinion is the best way to clean the back of the neck after playing?

I normally get a damp cloth and run it lightly over the back then get a dry cloth and do the same until it's all smooth.

I only use a tiny bit of water. Is this inherently bad for the neck?

Cheers!

Hmm. Good question!

Based on my experience and what I was able to find online, that approach sounds about right (since we're talking about the BACK of the neck).

On the very rare occasions that I've cleaned the back of my necks (they don't really seem to get dirty for me, but YMMV) I've always just used a very damn cloth, wiped it up and down a few times, then dried it immediately after.

If anyone else has suggestions, thoughts, comments, I'd be curious to read it, too.

I use Windolene with vinager in it and a microfibre cloth, gets all grease and dirt off and leaves a streak free finish, i use it on the body too.

^ I take it you haven't run into any unwanted reactions with your fretboard(s)?

That's basically what I do. The "tiny bit of water" is really no more than what comes off my sweaty hands.

Right, I was thinking about accidental contact, not deliberate. I know you aint fool enough to use that stuff on the fretboard!

I usually dont need to clean the back of the neck other than a lightly run with a damp cloth, same for the fretboard. I always wash my hands before playing so there is not grease , katchup and mustard to clean up

My neck has an oil finish. I just rub it down with fast fret and a clean dry cloth afterward.

I'm beyond OCD when it comes to hygiene, let alone before playing any of my basses. My hands are perpetually clean

Twice a year I buff the hell out of just about everything on my basses except the fret board with this: Amazon.com: Zymol Z503 Car Cleaner Wax - 16 oz.: Automotive

You won't have to clean it very often!

Just make sure it does NOT contain Silicone. That's a no-no for all wood instruments.

Not too often though?

It's not good to oil too often, only when the fretboard looks/feels a bit dry.
Also, maybe every 6 months or year, you can take a razor blade and lightly scrape in between the frets to get the finger grime off the fretboard. Then a little steel wool, to polish up the frets. Finish off with some lemon oil, and your fretboard will look brand spankin new.

Yes! I've found that any kind of sanitary-type-wipe works really well for painted bodies (not finished/oiled wood, of course).

I use those Lysol wipes for all sorts of stuff, like, basses, laptop, monitors, keyboards, etc.

On the bass body it's great because it evaporates and leaves no streaks, and doesn't scratch in the least.
