Big nut....

I have a student who got a used Ibanez for beginning band... The action is high, and it appears that the nut is tremendously high... He is a 6th grader and is having trouble fretting at the first fret... it is that high... Is this something that can be adjusted or can he get a new nut? I don't know what the deal he got was, but I want him to take it back and have em set it up...

The answer is both. The nut can be recut or it can be replaced. If the instrument was purchased at a store they should be willing to make the adjustment. If they are not willing or the instrument was purchased from an individual then any decent tech can recut it or replace it with an inexpensive plastic nut for a nominal charge.

Wurd... For what it's worth Bobby, I do this type of setup on my own basses and have done them for the local middle school as well... With a bit of patience and care, lowering the nut slots can be done reasonably well by anyone who has an idea of how a bass should play... Worst case scenario is that it needs to be taken to a tech for a new nut, but then again... With the work you've done on your 'Anit-Beatle', ( ), you're totally capable. I've got some mini-files that work nicely. You're more than welcome to them.

THanks guys... I have my doubts about his family getting it done or taking it in... I may just do it myself next week... I will get back to you on the files, Robert... thanks a heap...
