Sign in to disble this ad
I got an Allparts JMF-BB neck (Jazz Maple Finished, Bound and Block) - i.e. a Geddy-style neck - to go on my black Precision.
I took it to my tech to put on and told him I want a black nut on it (the neck did not come with a nut installed). He told me that he would have to put on a white nut. He said they don't make a black nut (Tusq, bone, graphite, whatever) that is tall enough.
That just doesn't sound right to me. I just looked up black Tusq/bone/graphite nuts on Allparts.com and StewMac.com and it *seems* like there are choices that would work. But, what do I really know about replacing a nut?
So, can any of you tell me what specs I need for a nut for this neck? Or even point me at a specific nut that I could order or something?
Thanks!

Did it right in my kitchen. Worked out fine.

The Black Tusq XL 4-string Fender Jazz Bass Nut seems like an obvious candidate. http://www.graphtech.com/product-282-2/
But then, that makes me wonder why my tech would say he can't get a tall enough nut if that one would work. Is there something different about the nut slot on my Allparts neck compared to a standard Fender Jazz neck?

It's been a year, so my memory might be a little foggy. I know when I was looking I was just looking for one to fit a fender Jazz neck. I do remember that the nut I got was a little too wide for the pre-cut nut slot but not too short. Quote:

I'm not looking at the neck right now, but my recollection is that the slot for the nut is flush with the bottom of the fretboard, not the top. And isn't the fretboard something like 1/4" thick?
So, doesn't that mean this nut won't even come up to the level of the fretboard?
Obviously, I really know nothing about this stuff.

But I'll go out here on a limb and say that no way is the depth of the slot 1/4" deep.....

Now, what kind of glue should I use when I put it in? Regular old Elmer's? Elmer's Wood Glue?
I assume it shouldn't be anything TOO strong. The glue is really just to keep it from falling out whenever you have the strings off, right?

You can also expect to sand the sides down to fit in the slot. If the slot is curved as opposed to flat you can place sand paper on the fretboard and use that as a level for sanding the nut. for the sides just lay sandpaper on a flat surface and sand down the sides of the nut.
It's super hard to get a perfect fit on an aftermarket nut to neck so expect to do a little tweaking. |
