| The way to do it 'right' is to remove the frets, carve the squares into the neck, install the square inlays, then sand the fretboard and inlays so that they are flush and even, then refret.
A cheap alternative is to put fretmarker "stickers" on top of the board. You can feel them, unfortunately, but reports are that they look almost real and stay stuck for a long time.
