I also suggest looking into other instruments- violin, drums, etc. You might incororate some ancient construction technique in an unusal way. Research Ken Smith's building approach- he's a wood nut.

The Guitar Player Repair Guide by Dan Erlewine is widely regarded as the bible of the repair industry. It is an easy read and provides you with the basic and advanced data, tool lists, and techniques to repair any guitar.

The aforementioned Melvyn Hiscock text is also a good overview of various building techniques.

If you are serious about repair or building, Dan's video course is pricey and worth every penny.

All are highly recommended.

THAT is right on target. Erlewine is the authority, and both the book and videos are available at Amazon - you will often find the book available used.
