brass headstock reinforcement plate

supposedly a brass plate cut to match the profile of the headstock and bolted on the back with the tuning machines helps sustain and tuning, has anyone done this?

He is probably trying to avoid the fatfinger since it's ugly. Probably why he mentioned the discrete brass plate behind the headstock.

I would first go to the local music store and try the Fat Finger to see if it would make any diference on MY bass and only then consider adding a permanent brass plate to the headstock.

Hey, it could be a lot uglier. I use a guitar capo 'cause I'm too cheap to buy a Fat Finger. It tunes out the dead spot around the 7th fret of my D and G just fine though.

And you'd have added permanent neckdive as well.

Guys, GrooveTubes makes a Fat Head also, which is exactly what you're talking about... more popular is the Fat Finger, since it's about 1/5 the price and more easily removable.

I'm not sure about the Fat Head. Their site says:

These are now sold by ZZRyder. http://www.zzryder.com to head directly to their website for more information.

but when you go to zzryder site there is nothing there about the Fat head. I'm assuming that they're using them on their guitars only at the moment. Beats me.

Wouldn't a badass/ other high mass bridge do the same thing?

A BA bridge is very good for sustain, but if you want to go the whole hog you want metal at both ends. I've had a (1 mm thick) shaped plate of stainless steel on the back of my P headstock these 15 years, and it works excellently well. It stiffens the wood so it doesn't micro-flop about so much, which translates into more focused tone and greater tuning stability. At least that´s been my experience.

The Fat Head is what you're thinking about, however, I have yet to encounter one.

I want to though, one day.
