Brass/replacement nuts

Anyone got any experience with putting brass nuts on basses. I have a vintage Yamaha (very similar to a BB1000) and the nut looks shot to me.
I've heard mixed reviews of the tone you get with a brass nut.

They are a waste of time & money.

How about Graph-Tech?

I have used their Black Tusq. Pretty nice to work with, and doesn't smell bad like bone when you grind it.
