Brass saddles?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I ended up with a '51 P-bass RI yesterday. I like the tone but it just seems a touch thin to me. The thought of a replacement bridge seems like it would pretty much defeat the purpose of having the RI in the first place. So, I'm trying to keep the stock bridge if at all possible and just make some new saddles out of some brass stock I have sitting around. The brass I have is stupid hard, will this brighten the tone? Or, will the added density of the brass give it more oomph? Will it do both?

The biggest effector on tone are your strings - have you changed the stock strings?

Get new strings and get a good pro setup done. Experiment with different pickup heights.

Brass saddles won't do much, if anything.

Here is all you need to know, Grasshoppa:

La Bella Deep Talkin' flats.

Go now, and play rounds no more.

Yes I changed out the strings from stock. I'll try the pickup height next. As for the setup I have a kit on the way to start doing them myself so I'm holding out for that.

Oh, and I know La Bella flats are amazing. I'm going to get a set next paycheck.

Brass bridge

From what I have experienced, brass will darken your tone a little. I was able to a/b identical bridges, one brass and one aluminum on the same bass. The aluminum was a bit brighter and the brass, a bit darker with a bit more sustain. Nothing drastic though.
