Bridge Dilema

I have a great Fender jazz bass, but i desperatly want a solid bridge for it. What are your guy's recomendations? Im going to take it to a tech to have it installed, if that makes a difference. Price doesnt matter, i just want a quality piece with good sustain. Thanks!

edit: After i worte this, i did some browsing and came across the badass II bridge. Are there any others? I would like to compare.

Browse some more....
BadAss
Hipshot
Gotoh
Fender (what's wrong with the bridge you're using?)

Anyhow, there is a ton of info here on TB. Advanced search and look for bridge in the title only and you should get more than you need to make an informed decision.

Cheers!

Don't forget Schaller; the string spacing is adjustable:

If it is a vintage bass, you might want to make sure it is a direct replacement since changing the bridge will hurt resale value.

Many people claim that switching to a Badass II bridge caused the Heavens to open and Mana to rain down. And many people consider them to be snake oil.

hahahaha. Its not a vintage, just a MIM special. I just dont like the flimsiness (is that a word?) of the stock bridge. PLus, it gives me a reason to upgrade the bass

I'd still look for direct replacement just to save a lot of headache. I'd also go with a quick loader for the same reason. The Schaller mentioned above is neither, but the Schaller 2000 ($110 at allparts) is both. So are the Hipshot Vintage and B Style and there will be a direct replacement Hipshot A Style within a couple of months. My next mod will be a Chrome finished brass Hipshot B Style. I think it's worth noting that our well respected brother Nino Valenti uses this as original equipment on his basses. Go on over to www.hipshotproducts.com and check out the bass bridges and grab a three string retainer while you're there to keep your A under control.

I have the Hipshot Bent Plate Vintage. I love it. preserves the look of the Jazz bass without making it look really effing stupid... (badass)

Plus it's cheap, drop in and has quick load.

Even though it might look stupid, i was able to play a jazz with the badass and i really liked it. I went ahead and bought the badassII for about 75.00 us. I also picked up some elixers for the new bridge. I will let everyone know how it comes out.

Don't forget you have to file the saddles on the bridge for the strings.

The hipshot was only about $38 bucks

Where can you get a hipshot for $38? That vintage bent bridge looks very cool.

Badass II bridge. IMO, saddle filing is optional. I played a guy's MIM that had the BAII and he didn't file the saddles, worked fine and sounded great.

I used to recommend the BAII like crazy, until I came across Hipshot A series bridges. I still love my BAII, don't get me wrong, but I believe that the Hipshot A series bridge are the "cutting edge" of the bass bridge world. They look damn cool, too. (almost as good as my BAII. )

The part that I like the most is the quick-stringing capability. No more trying to straighten out the tuning peg ends of the strings in order to get it through the hole in the back of the bridge. This will also help keep away those little scratches you can get below the bridge due to sliding the strings in and out. If my BAII had this capability, I'd love it even more.

+1. I still haven't filed the saddles on my BAII, and it works perfectly fine.

Not to hijack the thread, but that 3 string retainer from Hipshot is awesome! The A string vibrate thing drives me crazy.

I bought a three string tree from hipshot because of that. I also picked up a thumb rest. I will post some pics of the bass in this thread when i get that bridge installed.

I was pretty nervous about drilling holes in my headstock but it was worth it. The difference in the feel and sound of my A string is barely discernable but it's there and it looks awesome!
