Bridge Mounting Holes Fun.

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Folks, my first time here.

I recently got a hold of a Tobias Renegade 5 string, which I want to do some upgrades to. I really like the pickups but hate the preamp, so I got a Glockenklang 2 band to install. I will need to drill one new pot hole and wire it up. Might also copper foil the pickup cavities if they aren't already and wire them to the shielding in the control cavity. Anyways, I think I am good with all of that.

I also hate the bridge, and I'd prefer a Hipshot A. The stock bridge has four mounting screws, and I noticed that the Hipshot A Fender mount also had four screws in the same spot, and the online store had a good deal $72.

Well, after receiving the Hipshot A, the spacing on the four mounting screws is not quite the same as the stock bridge...of by a mm or two depending on the hole...

So I was wondering if anyone had any advice for mounting this bridge?

Here is my plan as of right now based on some other stuff I found on the Interwebs:

Drill out the current screw holes to the width of the threads (or, that is, the width of a wood dowel that is as small as possible while covering the width of the threads).

Put in the dowels (tight fitting with a strong wood glue), then let it all dry. Cut of the dowels and sand down smooth.

Drill out pilots for the new holes and used those to attach the bridge.

So is this a good or bad idea? Is there a better way?

Should I just look at another bridge? Most bridges have mounting holes in that same spot. Hipshot has one called the Transtone that has mounting holes in the corners, but the intonation settings look kinda squirely. They also have a D style with mounting holes in other spots, but they want $200 for it!

I apologize if this is already answered on the site, I could not find it. Also, sorry for being so long winded.

Thanks in advance for any feedback or advice.

That's the way you do it. I would lay tape on body marking the perimeter of the stock bridge for reference and then mark on it the center line of the screws. Then take it off. Plug holes, lay tape across the center line, line the Hipshot up, mark the holes and drill. Screw it down.

I am not a luthier. But this worked fine for me.

Thanks for the advice, guys! I am going to give it a try...

Guess if I screw it up I can always get one of the other bridges...
