Bridge and Nut Buzz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,

I just re-stringed my Schecter Stiletto Studio and ever since I put the new strings on, I've been noticing this slight buzz on my E and A strings whenever I pluck them, open or fretted. It sounds quite loud at the nut, a little less loud at the bridge, and not really noticeable in between. I'm not sure if the amp can pick it up - if it can, it's very feint. However, it's still pretty annoying to me, at least. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what it might be.

I doubt it's the strings hitting frets - I have the action up pretty high as it is. And my bridge doesn't have traditional saddles, and I don't see anything that could rattle. I'm kind of at a loss here. These strings are a higher gauge than the old strings, so is it possible that it's the connection between the strings and nut/bridge itself?

I'll take a guess- maybe you don't have enough down-force at the nut because of how you wound the strings?

That's possible. What do I need to do differently? I made sure there there was plenty of string to wind and I wound down.

How's the neck relief?

BTW, where's the other 49 Mongos?

Sorry for the delay.

The neck is definitely bowed, but I wouldn't call it too much. These strings, being heavier, definitely increased it, but not significantly. Should I try adjusting the truss rod?

Oh, and I'm not sure where the other Mongos went either. Maybe we'll see them at the convention.

Maybe I should just try putting the old strings back on. Maybe these are too thick or something.

Sounds like it may benefit from a trussrod adjustment.

Did you re-string with a lighter gauge or a different brand string?

I had a similar problem with my MIA Fender Precision. When I received the bass, the E-string was a wound .105. I put on a set of Chromes (flats with an E-string at .100) and the E-string buzzed/hummed every time I plucked it. The buzz increased/ decreased as the intensity of pluck increased/decreased.

I realized that the nut was cut for .105 and the .100 was, ever-so-slightly, hitting against the wall of its nut slot as it vibrated after being plucked.

This could be your issue.

Best of luck.
