bridge/saddle adjustment

I'm new to bass-tweaking and will be installing a new bridge on my Jazz bass. I know nothing about the adjustment of the saddles. I always see guitars and basses with the saddles for different strings in different, seemingly random, positions. Are there guidelines or measurements as to how these are supposed to be set up? Could someone educate me on this?
