Bridge screw/spring replacement?

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought this bass a while ago, and I've been trying to figure out a way to fix the bridge. As you can see, the B string segment is missing the black screw head the others have, and is also missing the spring on the horizontal screw underneath. The repair shops I've brought it to say they can't find replacement parts for it.

Is there anything I can do to find replacements, or do I need to replace the whole bridge?

The bass plays fine, it's just difficult to adjust the intonation on the low B string without the screw and the spring.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like the hole for the locking screw in the base plate for the B saddle is partially covered by the saddle. If it is, that's why that screw was left out and the slot in the saddle will have to be elongated for a new screw to fit if you want to replace it. The bridge looks like it is a 4 string bridge design that was "expanded" to create a 5 string version so there is not enough adjustment for B string intonation. If the slot in the saddle needs to be elongated, this can be done with a small round file and plenty of elbow grease.

It also looks like the hole in the saddle for the intonation screw is "blind" and the original screw was too long to adjust the saddle far enough back for the B string intonation to be set, so it was left out.

I don't recognize the bridge brand so I can't help on a replacement screws except to suggest contacting the bridge or instrument's manufacturer. The bridge may need to be removed to find a name.

If that fails, you could also take a saddle and screws to music stores or hardware stores to see if they have screws with the correct threads and head size. Since it looks like the hole in the saddle for the intonation screw is "blind", the screw will need to be the correct length.

There is not enough room between the saddle and bridge for a spring on the intonation screw. The spring is not absolutely necessary. It is only used to hold the saddle in place when changing strings.

You may be better off with another bridge that was designed for 5 string.

Thanks

Thanks a lot for the informative reply, I was thinking I might have to get the whole thing replaced in the end, since no matter how much time I spent looking online (several hours using Google) I could never find this particular bridge model anywhere, so there's no chance at contacting the manufacturer or getting parts.

That's the odd thing about this bass - the only things with corporate logos are the tuners and pickups. I have no clue who made the bridge or the rest of the bass.

Sad thing about the bridge. Looks like it's well made.
