Brilliant thumbrest?

Pictured is a Japanese Atlansia bass. Is it just me or is the thumb rest brilliant? It would basically feel like a fifth string for your thumb to rest on to facilitate playing the E string with your fingers, and you could rest your hand anywhere up or down the strings. Notice how its distance from the E matches the string spacing.

I'm going to try to make something similar for a P bass.

If you do, post pics!

I was thinking of trying to do so myself, but am trying to locate parts.

Atlansia

I have been bugging these guys for Months!!! I want some of their tuners for my FrankenSteinberger but I think they are having production issues. There is also a bit of a language barrier. Their designs are freaking Awesome - they really strike me as much art as function.

Nice. I was thinking of doing this for my 5er since I play it more than my 4 banger. I'd love to tighten up my skills on finger style anyways, plus I've been itching to build something for a while. I totally sliced my finger at work last week with a 6 inch straight knife, and I'm off of bass playing until further notice. It doesn't stop me from doing side projects!

Atlantasia makes some really really cool stuff. One of the very few forward thinking design oriented instrument companies out there. I've always dug their pod style pickups...think of all the options!

It's doing better already, and I did it last Thursday. Still having a hard time bending it, but its getting better.

Any progress on your idea?

I'm glad you're healing up.

I managed to find the necessary parts at my local hardware store for ~$5. I bought a steel bar a bit thicker than an E string and not prone to bend, and two copper lugs to hold each end firmly in place:

x2

The steel bar stretches from the bridge to the neck, just like the image in the first post of the thread. I screwed the assembly into a cheap P bass a string-spacing away from the E and I'll have to cut away a small part of the pickguard to allow room for the neck-side lug. I'll post pictures when it's finished. It ain't pretty, but therein lies the beauty of it!

NOTE: G&L and Music Man bridges are a little wider than Fenders, so it might be trickier to get the thumb rest a string-spacing away from the E. This shouldn't be an issue with a stock Fender bridge or a Badass.

Also, pickup height and width has to be taken into consideration, though if the thumb rest is the same height as the strings (washers can be used if necessary) it won't be an issue.

That's all fine and good until I have a few drinks and try to play the thumb rest like a B string.

Looks like a great idea! Well thought out.

This, on the other hand...

Those are some really cool designs. Very different. Not quite sure about that two string, though.
