I have a graphite nut in my MIM J Bass. It replaced the cheap plastic nut that eventually broke just like yours did. Haven't had problems since.

I'd highly recommend using the bone or tusq nut over the plastic one. You'll have greater durability and (arguably) better tone.

Brass. I did the same thing years ago and got talked into having a brass nut put on my old J bass. It didn't sound that different and it's probably still in service out there somewhere.

Sorry to hear of your busted nut. I've been meaning to get a bone for mine (my J).

You should be able to find pre-slotted tusq, bone, graphite, or any other material that you want very very easily.

Also, this entire thread makes it really hard (tee hee hee) not to giggle at all the innuendo. :3

Think about how long that nut is going to be on the instrument...and whether it's worth spending another $2 or $3.

Always use protection, especially when it's a "bass" you don't plan on keeping for long.

Maybe you can make a new nut out of a athletic support cup, it would offer protection of "bustin your nut again"

What are the thread's thoughts on only rolling with EAD - sans G? Seems like a bad idea to me. Seems like it'd put some odd torque on the neck not to mention the fact that the tension will be one string lighter, doesn't it?

I'd assume it's not so hot of an idea. It's not going to put the correct tension on the neck, so you might get some fret buzz. It's also not going to disperse the tension evenly, which means that it could eventually twist the neck. While I'm sure that this would take more than a few weeks to accomplish, I am definitely sure that it is not something you should attempt to do for any period of time longer than you absolutely have to.
