today when restring, my already chipped nut broke down on the end by the g string. i can no longer use the g string for a bit, so its rollin Ead for now. im debating between bone, tusq or going with a plastic filler again, suggestions? i like bone but its pricey (not really)
bone- 9$
tusq- 7$
plastic- 4$

It replaced the cheap plastic nut that eventually broke just like yours did. Haven't had problems since.
I'd highly recommend using the bone or tusq nut over the plastic one. You'll have greater durability and (arguably) better tone. |

|  | Registered User | | | | | Brass. I did the same thing years ago and got talked into having a brass nut put on my old J bass. It didn't sound that different and it's probably still in service out there somewhere.

Also, this entire thread makes it really hard (tee hee hee) not to giggle at all the innuendo. :3 |

and i think rolin ead probably isnt good for extended periods of time, my new nut will be here in 2-3 days then ill fix it.

It's not going to put the correct tension on the neck, so you might get some fret buzz. It's also not going to disperse the tension evenly, which means that it could eventually twist the neck. While I'm sure that this would take more than a few weeks to accomplish, I am definitely sure that it is not something you should attempt to do for any period of time longer than you absolutely have to. |
