Broken Post!?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've posted about my Dean Razor Standard in another TB forum,
but that had to do with the saddles.(Too soft & breaking strings
because of burrs)

Anyway, yesterday I was practicing and I went to check my tuning
and the D string tuning peg post broke. It completely comes out
of the head of the bass! It's like it was sheared off internally.
I had a gig last night, a jazz trio, and luckily I have other basses.
But this is my main bass, my only active bass. So I brought it to
my local tech for tuner replacement, all four.
Why do some manufacturers use materials that clearly aren't up to
the job? I don't know if you're familiar with the type of metal I
mean. It looks kind of like a brushed, soft gray aluminum(plastic looking).

I guess I'm lucky it happened while practicing and not on the gig!
Is it too much to ask to have reliable equipment? I've only had
this bass for about 4 years. Well, hopefully the after market
tuners will be stable. Replacing the bridge & saddles is next.

Today I picked up my bass complete with reliable, Lifetime Warranty
Grover tuners. The ones that were replaced were also Grover,
but clearly not as sturdy as the new ones.

They're the same size, and have the same shape as the ones that
were replaced, only difference is that they're shiny chrome instead
of that brushed plastic-looking metal. They actually seem smoother
turning than the old ones as well.

That's pretty cheesey quality. In fact, I've never seen anything that weak on a brand name tuner, so I'd say it must have been a rare internal fault in that particular piece of metal.

Whatever the case, I'm much happier with the new ones.
Now I just have to get a new bridge to match, then the only
plasticy metal parts will be the knobs, and I'm not too worried
about them.
