| Broken tuner

So I have been gone for the last month and a half on a cruise gig. I just ran into a bit of a problem:
I was playing one of the shows last week when the tension on my G string went. Thinking I broke a string, I sent an A/V tech into my cabin to grab my spare pack. When I started to put it on, I noticed no matter how much I turned the gear, nothing was happening. I had to have him run back for my Geddy Lee.
For some reason, nobody in the show band likes the jazz bass sound. The way they keep describing it is "brittle" and "too bright." I have been playing on a cheap Epiphone EBM bass. I brought it because I wanted to toy with something that had 24 frets, and I just installed a set of EMG pickups on it (P/J setup). After having done that, I realized it was pretty much akin to "polishing a turd."
When I get home, I was planning on replacing it with a better 24 fret P/J bass. My home port here is the Rome port (Civitavecchia), but the only tuners the music store at that port had was the Fender style, and I would have to know how to install them, since the mounts are completely different. The only other ideas I have are in Kusadasi, Istanbul, or going into Rome itself to find an actual instrument repair shop.
The MIM Fenders in Civitavecchia were about 800 Euros. That's way more than I would spend in Florida. Would I be better off replacing the axe now, or just repairing it for the time being and waiting to go home? By the way, I plan on keeping the brand new EBMs when I ditch the bass. I also can't have three basses, since I only have enough baggage space for two for the flight home, so buying a Fender P bass on top of it is out of the question.
