Building a bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Can someone link me to a good website that can help walk me through what to do? I have a good friend who is a wood-worker, and he will be helping me create the body. However, I don't know where to buy a neck, electronics, and all that stuff.... I don't want anyone on here to have to explain to me the whole deal, but for a project, I am trying to build a bass and I don't exactly know where to start...

you can search the luthier's forum below..............if you're looking to do a "parts" bass. check Warmoth, Stewmac, Allparts, etc..........you'll find everything you need.

www.projectguitar.com has some good reading........buy the book, Make Your Own Electric Guitar, by Melvin Hiscock.

if I buy that book, does it explain steps for making a bass guitar? Or are guitars and basses made basically the same way (as far as putting the parts together and all..)

It has two guitars and a bass, and it's building from scratch........if you are just looking to put a parts bass together I recommend searching this site as well as others on the web, folks will help you! And it's fun!!!!!

Well other than making the body, I will be putting parts together. Most sites i've found that aren't for building from scratch are for building from kits...

Thanks for the tips though; I'll keep searching this site and others.. I basically have no idea what I'm doing but it's going to be fun and I'm sure if I'm getting all the parts separately I can't screw up too bad (knock on wood )

hey J,

the Hiscock book will lead you through all you need to know about making a body to match to a pre-made neck (and even how to make a neck when you're finally ready to do so.) it's where I got my start ... and that start eventually lead into custom designs and builds.

I'd suggest reading the book thru a few times, and then tossing a few questions to the gang in the Luthier's forum on anything that isn't making sense.

besides project guitar, there is also the Music Instrument Makers Forum (mimf.com), but most of what you read there is focuse on acoustic instruments (a lot applies to electrics, so don't get discouraged if some things simply fly over your head upon first read)

here's to a successful first project
