Building my own

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a shop class, and I was thinking about the possiblities of building my own bass. I'm not sure how exactly to do it but my main concern is the fret spacing. If people could just leave maybe somewhere to find plans or recomendations. I was think of making it fretless with lines.

There's lots of people building their own. I've built two, and starting another now. A good place to start would be www.stewmac.com

They have an on-line fret scale calculator as well as a good supply of tools and parts. There are tons of other places with parts as well. Do the google thing- you'll be amazed at the wads of info.

if you would like to make a standard jazz or p bass, there are plans that you can purchase online. also, if you want you can always just build the body with the said plans, and then purchase a warmoth neck if the neck construction goes awry. ive been thinking about building one myself as well, and these are the things ive found so far. if you go to the luthiers forum, theres loads of information there on building your own bass, standard custom and what not.

You can buy pre slotted and radiused fretboards from LMI and Stewmac and other places, this saves on making jigs for fret slotting and fingerboard radiussing.

+1 on Luthier's Corner........Stickies, FAQ....Search option... This place is packed with useful informations about building your own.

Mimf (Musical Instrument Makers forum) would be a great site to consider also. Just make sure you double check available information before asking questions! - i must admit, i sometimes ask stupid question
