Buzz at 7th-11th frets, tighten truss rod?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, my bass buzzes at the 7th-11th frets, there is little buzz on frets 1-5 Im supposed to tighten the truss rod right, well I tightened it, i dont see any improvements, actually it got worse :S...

right now my neck has a little bit of relief.

Il wait till the rod settles and reply.

I think the problem is with the frets, since its a starter pack bass, I wont be surprised to find out that the frets arent that good.

Buzzing only in the middle of the neck usually indicates a truss rod is too tight and causing a very slight backbow to the neck.

Same...really? My G&L has frets 9-13 that buzz alittle easier than anywhere else on the neck. I can play without buzz, and the action is about 2.5mm at the 12th fret so it's standard low to medium action, but I had to straighten the neck to lessen it. It's almost completely straight (which I like personally).

If the poster says that the neck has relief how could there be a backbow?

*edit* I just re-read the original post. If there is buzzing on frets 1-5 as well then there isn't enough relief, so this could very well be the problem.

On my bongo 4 string I had some buzz after a good set up. the guys I have do it are the type that can eye it and see if it's straight. Turns out another guy did it this time. It was actually overstraightened a bit.

It still buzzed at perfectly straight. Not enough to be heard over the amp, but enough to bug the bejeezus out of me because I sing at the same time.

thats what I get for letting a bass player do the set up who is a slap/double thump guy when I barely even mess with slap.

to get it perfectly buzz free we had to set it too less than pefectly straight. I think this was because the bongo has a long kneck.

Not sure, I'm not a set up guy. I can put strings on but that's about it.

So, a buzz may indicate kneck may be too straight.

I know in my case, when I got the bass I felt there was too much relief and the 9th-12th fret on the E still buzzed. Maybe It could've been too much for my taste but not enough for the neck?

Regardless I have it setup now where those frets will buzz easier if I really dig in or pluck in correctly but not with normal playing, plugged in or other wise. As I said my neck is almost completely straight, and the string height is about 2.5mm (so about 3/32 which I think is standard) from the 12th fret.

I think it some cases like this it might take some experimenting.
